How to decorate a vegan house?

If you like the veggie lifestyle, we have the keys to change the decoration of your house.

Your house can become a vegan home without losing an iota of style and with a reduced budget. Do not get overwhelmed, it is not about changing its appearance overnight, nor is the process towards a veggie diet immediate. Surely you have a wool rug at home, which you can replace with another made of synthetic fiber; a down comforter to get rid of or some plastic utensils in the kitchen, which you will change for others made of wood or made with sustainable materials.

Veganism is a way of life. In Spain, it is estimated that around 8% of the population consumes products from the plant kingdom, according to the Green Revolution study by the consulting firm Lantern (2017). The data already showed that, in 2020, the global market for veggie products would be around no less than 5,000,000 million euros. Millennials are the most interested population spectrum, and it is noted that one in ten women is vegan in our country. It is worth remembering that if you follow a vegan diet you have to avoid nutritional deficiencies.

The main reasons for joining the veggie culture are the renunciation of the use and consumption of products of animal origin, promoting general well-being and protecting the environment. This special interest in ecology is key when conceiving a vegan home, although what is sought is to create welcoming spaces with elements that incorporate the cruelty free seal, which certifies that they do not harm or kill animals for their production.

It is not a decorative style

A vegan decoration is a source of inspiration based on the ethics of these precepts. In this sense, it does not use any material of animal origin, so it opts for vegetable, ecological elements that do not have toxic components. Of course, recycling or rather reusable elements are welcome.

This concept is gaining more followers every day. The first vegan hotel room was introduced over a year ago, at the Hilton London Bankside hotel. Even Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, who is a convinced vegan and animal lover, was surprised a few months ago by her firm decision to use eucalyptus paint, from the British firm The Organic & Natural Paint Co, to decorate her son’s room without toxic substances..

Physical and mental well-being

Vegan decoration is a healthier and more humane alternative. It uses ecological materials, so toxicity and waste are reduced. Health benefits, because without realizing it, chemical substances penetrate the body, and since veggie products are prohibited from being used, we would be exempt from this damage. In addition, it has been shown that they are perfect for allergy sufferers or people who suffer from a disease of the respiratory system.

Look at the labels

The most frequent mistake is not knowing how to recognize if the materials have an animal or vegetable origin. If we bet on environmentally friendly decoration, cotton is the star. Linen is also one of the top materials for the vegan lifestyle, which is also committed to jute, nylon or synthetic fibers, such as orlon, thinsulate, microfiber or thermolite. Vegetable wax and polyester, as long as it is recycled, join this list.

However, leather, feathers, or materials made from animal hair are automatically ruled out of veggie decor. There is also no place for beeswax, silk or wool, as they are raw materials that come from the animal world.

Long live the imagination!

The British animal organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), is one of the great activists of the cause. For this reason, they decided to promote respect for the rights of animals in decoration and created the Vegan Homeware Awards, which support designs and firms committed to respecting these precepts. The big firms did not hesitate to sign up to this trend, even Zara Home and Ikea picked up two awards for the design of a plaid and a rug, respectively.

Without a doubt, one of the most spectacular concepts is the salt seat, from Erez Nevi Pana. The young Israeli has been inspired by the Dead Sea to create salt stools with remnants of recycled wood, which are amalgamated with plant and mineral substances native to his country.
