Modern Small Houses 2022: +50 images and decoration ideas

If you live in a small house or have a small room or space, there are many things regarding decoration and organization that you can do to create a larger and more welcoming environment. Here are some tips for decorating small houses. With a certain color, furniture organization and correct lighting, you will feel that the space is larger and more practical.

For all those who do not have enough space, here are some ideas to make the most of each room in the house, without over-furnishing the rooms.

Furniture for small houses

It is very common to have small rooms in our house and many times we just have to find the right decoration so that it can feel bigger. There are various decorating techniques that enlarge a room. These are some regarding furniture.

Furniture location

Furniture should be comfortable and not block passage or movement within the room in a small house. You can opt for chairs without arms, a low table and small pieces instead of big and tall ones. The more ground you can see, the more spacious the place will feel. Keep the room uncluttered with simple furniture.

Rearrange the furniture. Look critically at the room, with the eyes of a stranger. Are there areas not used? Ask yourself why, and then rearrange your furniture so that space isn’t wasted.

Furniture size

Furniture should be the right size, custom made. It is important to take advantage of every space and inch in small houses. The size and amount of furniture we have is very important, remember that less is always more, since open spaces are always more visually pleasing and more comfortable to live in. Although a larger object such as a good armchair will also help us to give the room a little volume.

If you have the opportunity to furnish your home from scratch, it would be very good if you took into account that low furniture generates more open spaces.

You should also keep furniture low in height, as this will increase the height of the ceiling even more. Or just the opposite, furniture from floor to ceiling, they also manage to give the feeling of a high wall. In short, you should totally avoid medium-height furniture.

Multifunctional furniture

This is undoubtedly one of the best options for small houses. For example, a seat in the living room that doubles as a coffee table, or perhaps as in the photo, having a small library on the sofa.

Open shelves

Putting open shelves, without doors or with transparent doors, gives the feeling of extra space, since the depth is seen, otherwise, the feeling of having the furniture on our noses is generated. This trick is especially handy in small kitchens.

Bookstores

Despite the fact that many today dare to say that books have their days numbered, all lovers of reading, regardless of age, know that this is not the case, since the magic of a book, there is no virtual device that can resemble it.

And for that reason and taking into account how small apartments are today, we want to present some bookcase ideas for small houses below.

The most attractive options, as we see here, are to use them as room dividers, betting on occupying a single space and being able to fulfill two functions at the same time. This way we will achieve intimacy and at the same time, we will be able to have the collection of our favorite books, in a space that also contributes to the decoration of the home.

Another option that can be implemented is to place the library against a wall, which has a sliding door, which allows it to close and thus be able to use the room more comfortably, according to the occasion. When you have a party, it can be closed and placed in front of the sliding door, an armchair for people to sit on, without having to lean on the bookcase.

Finally, the option that is being implemented the most today. With the rise of recycling of old houses, it is common to find some homes with heights that are too great for what is necessary, so it has been decided to use the empty space that remains on top, thus taking advantage of every inch of the house.

Colors for small houses

To give a different touch to the home, it is not necessary to make major renovations, just by emphasizing certain aspects, one can give it the quality of home that every house deserves.

Bright colors

You must remember that bright colors enlarge and dark colors reduce. Therefore, the light colors used in our interiors are the main thing, especially the white color, it will reflect a lot of light giving us a clear sense of expansion. Of course, the continuity of colors in nearby spaces is also very important, since putting different colors would give us the sensation of visual limits that would reduce the space in small houses.

Cold colors

For furniture, you should choose cool colors as they trick the eyes into thinking objects are further away than they really are. It is one of the most common tips for decorating small rooms.

Monochrome color scheme

Another trick that can be used is to play with the colors that are within the same family, using different shades in cotton fabrics, upholstery and curtains. They have to be fresh, delicate and warm colors.

Playing with different shades of a color is a very effective way to expand a space.

Trim colors

Changing the accent pillows in the room is the easiest way to make a noticeable difference with color. You can change the cover with the change of seasons. If spring is near, choose pastel, pale colors, or you can also play with primary colors. For winter, choose darker colors. If it’s fall, you can opt for colors you see in nature, such as shades of gold, brown, copper, rust, and terracotta.

When a color is used in one room, it has to be reused in other parts of the area, in order to achieve a cohesive organization. As you change accent pillows, other trims and pieces can be changed as well. The eye must be able to follow the color around the room.

You can use a secondary color on a chair with patterned upholstery. You’ll be amazed at how this little change of color can transform a space.

Colors on walls and furniture

Coordinate the colors of the wall and the furniture. Color contrasts tend to break up a space, allowing you to play with depth. On the other hand, if the furniture is mixed with the walls, using the same colors, the space will feel flatter, since the sensation of depth is lost.

Paint the ceiling a light color to give it more height and width.

The soil is also important. At first glance, a small room looks larger with a solid floor, in a single color or with a uniform material. Therefore, be careful with the use of small rugs, as they tend to dwarf the space.

Although we recommend maintaining the range of colors in the different spaces, it is always very important to give each of them a touch of identity.

It is very good to paint the walls and the objects on them, such as light switches, in the same color. You will keep the room tidier and more spacious.

Lighting for small houses

Every room is enlarged with good lighting, be it natural or artificial light. Leave the window clear and install good lighting.

You must keep the curtains in a small room translucent. It is important that there is light inside the room, so it is good to use semi-transparent curtains that let in sunlight. Never even think of blocking the view of the window, that would take away the light from the space, making it dark and creating a feeling of confinement.

In lighting two points must always be taken into account; on the one hand the height of the lamp and on the other the type of light bulb used. Remember that a white light opens up the environment more and a tall and delicate lamp will give the space spaciousness and a touch of elegance.

If we are talking about a small dining room, you should place a lamp above the main table. The attention will be drawn to the table, making the walls appear to be further away than they are.

Large Mirrors

As we have already said several times, mirrors generate the optical illusion of space, so it is very common to place them in small houses to generate that visual idea of extension. But not only that, a mirror is a source of reflection of natural light that can enter through the windows, so the environment will seem larger. It also uses reflective surfaces where space and light are reflected.

You can also use mirrors in those key places in the house that do not receive much light and it seems important to highlight them, remember that they multiply the feeling of space and light.

Ornaments and accessories in small houses

Use sheer fabrics to allow light to pass through. Use it on windows, tablecloths, covers and furniture. If you want more than just solid colors, you can look for soft florals or simple stripes.

Add fresh flowers or natural plants. Artificial plants do not give a room the same fresh feeling as real ones. Be sure to consider the space in which they are placed so as not to overload some areas.

Lastly, if you want to use wallpaper, you should choose one that has large patterns. Small drawings and patterns make the room look even smaller.

One of the principles that we must take into account is that visual effects are the best technique we have when it comes to expanding the spaces of small houses.

Clean up the mess

If a small space is cluttered or has too many things, it will undoubtedly be an uncomfortable and useless space. You must keep things out of sight, organize the table, the shelves and not leave things loose. The environment will feel more open.
